Radiation Oncology

Oncology:

Our Oncology Center bound to Trabzon KanuniTraining and Research Hospital meet the needs of cancer patients coming from Trabzon and its surrounding region as well as neighboring countries (Georgia, Azerbaijan, etc.).

Oncology is the medical study in the field of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer. Oncology is generally composed of three types of treatment, namely radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy.

Radiation Oncology:

Radiotherapy (Beam therapy) means using radiation (electron particles or high-energy X rays) for treatment of tumor tissues. The aim of radiotherapy is to destroy tumor tissues while minimizing damage to healthy normal tissues. For this purpose, radiation is given by special radiotherapy devices. In recent years, while tumor tissues are targeted, healthy normal tissues are protected a lot better by radiotherapy devicesdevelopedwith advances in technology.With linear accelerators used in our clinic, patients are treated by using three dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3-D CRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques. Moreover, image-guided, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IG-IMRT) is also performed. Owing to these opportunities in our clinic, our patients are treated with minimal side effectsby utilizing devices having the latest technology.

TomoTherapy

Together with advances in technology, TomoTherapy is one of the most important radiotherapy devices. TomoTherapy was developed with a new concept.It treats helically. It performs image-guided, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IG-IMRT).


Advantages of TomoTherapy:

Target Therapy: Owing to MVCT performed prior to treatment, the location of tumor is exactly determined. Thus, while giving higher dose to targeted tumor, the surrounding normal tissues are protected maximally.

Less side effect: Since normal tissues are protected a lot better, much less side effects are seen compared to classical radiotherapy devices.

Secondary Irradiation: In regions given high dose previously, it allows a reliable radiotherapy opportunity in tumors recurring near vital organs such as medulla spinalis, kidneys, brain stem, heart, etc.

Saving Time: It gives opportunity for irradiating more than one cases simultaneously. By this way, time is saved.

Elektra Synergy Platform Linear Accelerator:

Treatment devices called “linear accelerators” have been used in radiotherapy for the last almost 50 years. The basic mechanism of these devices are as follows. Beams with different energies obtained by accelerating electronsaccording to patient’s need are directed toward the location of tumor. The common properties of these beams are having high energy, entering into body rapidly and being applicable to whole body.

Elektra Synergy Platform Linear Accelerator found in our clinic is a well-equipped radiotherapy device. It is generally used to apply three dimensional conformal radiotherapy. Furthermore, it has treatment options including step-and-shoot IMRT and electron beam. In order to be able to shape tumor geometry better, it has 80 multi-leaf collimators (MLC). It has energy options for photon treatment being 6 and 18 MV and for electron treatment being 4, 6, 10, 12, 15 and 18 MeV. To control position of patient’s tumor, system has an electronic portal imaging system (EPID). To be able to give more conformal therapies, system also has a carbon-fiber table moving in 4 directions, a gantry and collimator rotations.
